Who is the young lady who beat tennis ace Serena Williams at the Australian Open?
Her name is Sloane Stephens; she is 19 years old and is from Plantation, Florida. Her mother, Sybil Smith, was a top swimmer at Boston University and her father was the late John Stephens, who was a running back in the NFL for New England, Green Bay and Kansas City.
John Stevens was killed in an automobile accident in September 2009.
The teenager beat 31-year-old Serena, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. In Serena’s defense, she was playing with an injured back.
To put things into perspective, Sloane says she used to idolize the Williams’ sisters when she was a child and she had a poster of Serena on her wall.
Today, Stephens, who started playing tennis at the age of 9, is the youngest player in the top 20.
